Almost all my work begins in a sketchbook.
My sketchbooks are where much of my work begins. They travel with me into the landscape, through cities, gardens, coastlines and remote landscapes, gathering quick observations, colour notes, fragments of memory and the energy of being there.
Working on location keeps me connected to direct experience. I’m not trying to make perfect drawings, but to pay attention - to the fall of light, the shape of a tree, the rhythm of a path, the colour of a wall, the feeling of a place. These drawings often become the starting point for larger paintings back in the studio.
Alongside traditional sketchbooks, I also make unfolding concertina books. These allow a journey, landscape or idea to stretch across several pages, creating a visual story that can be read slowly, from one moment to the next.
The sketchbook pages shown here are not for sale, but they offer a glimpse into my process, my travels and the way drawing helps me understand the world around me.
